Caroline Camden Lewis. En El Principio. Encaustic on wood. 10″ x 8.” (2017). $598 (framed).
The Gospel of John begins thus in Spanish: “En el principio era el Verbo…” which translated means “In the beginning was the Word.” The preamble to the Gospel of John continues, “and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of me. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it” (John 1:1-5 NKJV).
This piece imagines how “the beginning” or “en el principio” might have appeared visually. It evokes colors of the formation of the earth, though God’s Word, the logos and the eternal Word, Christ, the Messiah.
Encaustic is an ancient art medium using beeswax, resin and pigment applied to wood at 180 degrees Fahrenheit.
