Caroline Camden Lewis.  Atonement.  Acrylic on canvas.  24″ x 36″

Atonement tells the story of the creation, fall and redemption of mankind through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  A paining of many layers it began with the bright green and purples, a vibrant garden of Eden.  Then covered in reds and oranges to represent earth, clay and toil—the cursed ground.  The cuts in the canvas represent the lashes and pains which Christ bore for humanity.  To set us free from the enslavement of sin due to the fall.  The layer of white is the coming of Christ and the blue wash represents atonement, the cleansing performed on a hill called Golgotha, the place of the skull.  Transformed into a place of life three days later with the resurrection.  Atonement means that the debt has been paid, that Christ bore the sting of death that we might not have to, that all things are transformed from vanity to purpose  From death to life, from wounded to healed.  This is atonement.
